Print or web focus? Web constraints?

Is this a print or web design challenge? It feels like it is both/either.

If this is a web design challenge, are there any specific constraints that we should bear in mind - browser version, screen resolution, mobile vs desktop, etc.

Thanks!

    Hi James,

You're right. It's a little of both. You can design for modern browsers like Chrome and Safari. Just keep in mind how things degrade for IE.

The focus is "desktop" since it is closer to print resolution. But you are more than welcome to propose a mobile layout too.

Thanks for the reply Ryan - couple of follow-ups:

So it would be ok to submit a web design, complete with menus, buttons, toggles and other UI elements, and we take it as a given that this would be implemented with a good print stylesheet (which we don't need to illustrate in our submission)? Or would we do one of both?

Also, there seems to be a mismatch between the supplied CCD and the challenge fields document - for instance, the fields doc lists "Plan of Care" and "problem list", but neither seems exactly the same as what's in the CCD (eg, VA Appointments, Medical Events).
Is that just a labeling mis-match, or should we find other CCDs to look at?

    Thanks!

Totally okay. It's always good to hint how it could look printed...

I'm working on getting sample CCDs that match the challenge fields document. The .txt file that is linked, is an existing Blue Button file. It was to convey how the information is presented today. You should refer to:
    http://blue-button.github.com/challenge/files/health-design-challenge-fields.pdf

    For the list of fields.

So we should take the fields in the linked to PDF with higher priority than other CCD formats?

That's correct. Those fields in the PDF are the ones that all EMRs will produce as a result of Meaningful Use 2.

is ok to submit a mock up (PDF) of what the screen should look like or do you actually need a working copy?

    Hi Alessandra,

A mock-up is only what is required. It can be an image or a PDF.

    Hi Ryan,

I see the record has been updated - the VA fields are gone, and what is left matches the challenge description. Thanks for supplying that.

Has the Sections and Fields doc been updated also? If so, could changes to the requirements be announced to people following the competition? It would be a shame for anyone to design to outdated requirements.

Are any further record changes planned?

    many thanks,
    James C

    Hi James,

We plan on providing more examples of records that match the fields, so you have more sample data than just "Ellen Ross".

I'll post a discussion topic tomorrow that captures any/all changes that we have made.

    Best,
    Ryan

The problem is that the CCD is deprecated for the CCDA. Welcome to Semantic Interoperability 101. This is a tough contest to define because there is machine readable XML and human readable on the surface. Splitting the challenge up into bits, per this discussion, was a very good idea.

    Hi Ryan,
following up on your comment about posting more sample data: is that still going to happen? We are starting our design shortly.
    thanks,
    James

    Hi James,

    More sample data is up:
    http://blue-button.github.com/challenge/files/more-fields.txt

It gives more examples of fields and some lab results.

    Best,
    Ryan
